INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A gathering place downtown has a new name, honoring a former Indianapolis mayor and senator.

The new Richard G. Lugar Plaza was dedicated Thursday by Mayor Joe Hogsett and former Mayor Greg Ballard.

The space is on the south side of the City-County Building and celebrates Lugar's contributions to the city.

"We wanted to become a city that attracted the attention of the world, that had leadership and that had opportunities and that remains a perspective of Mayor Hogsett and the council and the Chamber of Commerce," Lugar said.

The plaza has an event lawn that can hold up to 1,500 people along with artwork representing Indy's sister cities.
