ELWOOD, Ind. (WTHR) - The mother of an Elwood toddler has been arrested in connection with her son's death.

Ryder Stephen died October 29, just three days before his second birthday. The Madison County prosecutor confirmed to Eyewitness News the child's mother, Alyson Stephen, has been arrested. According to the Elwood Call Leader, the 23-year-old was arrested on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent.

Meanwhile, Ryder's stepfather Jacob Wootten claims he tried to revive the child for 20 minutes before someone called 911.

According to court documents, Wootten told police he thought his stepson Ryder Stephen had fallen in the bathtub and that he had the situation under control. But the doctor who performed the autopsy on the child told police he does not agree, saying "someone injured this child."

Officers also reported finding drugs at the home.

Wootten is facing preliminary charges of neglect, resisting arrest and drug possession. He will be back in court on Thursday.
