INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Colder temperatures have arrived in Indianapolis, which means it's time to make sure you are ready for winter.

It's easy to remember your coat, hat and gloves, but don't forget about those other tips for you home and car.

The Indianapolis Office of Public Health and Safety has some reminders to help you stay safe in the cold weather.

  • Learn the difference between watches, warnings and advisories
  • Replace furnace filters
  • If using space heaters, set them up at least three feet away from flammable items
  • Open your chimney flue before using a fireplace
  • Never use an oven or stove for heating
  • Check road conditions before driving
  • Drive slowly
  • If you slide, turn slightly into the skid
  • Check on vulnerable family and neighbors

Meanwhile, the City of Indianapolis shared this winter driving check list.

  • Make sure your tires can grip slippery roads
  • Give yourself a winter test drive
  • Know what to expect on your trip and plan accordingly
  • If you start sliding, turn slightly into the skid
  • Slow down and relax
  • Know when to quit

Also, consider making an emergency road kit with a blanket, first aid kit, non-perishable food items and a phone charger. For a more complete list, click here.
