CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WTHR) — A 10-year-old girl in northwestern Wisconsin is the prime suspect in the death of a 6-month-old baby.

District Attorney Wade Newell said the girl was in foster care at a home that doubled as an in-home daycare. That's where the girl accidentally dropped the baby boy, then she "proceeded to stomp on the 6-month-old's head," according to Newell.

According to WEAU, the baby hit his head ona stool when the girl accidentally dropped him, and he started crying. Newell said the girl panicked, so she started stomping the baby's head. The baby died Nov. 1 at the hospital.

The girl reportedly confessed in follow-up interviews with the sheriff's department.

In a press conference, the sheriff said the department received a 911 call saying a 6-month-old boy was unresponsive and bleeding from the head. A medical pathologist testified to the injuries being consistent with a fall, and also said tread marks on the baby's head matched the girl's shoes.

The girl is being tried in adult court, but that could change. The daycare has voluntarily shut down while the investigation continues.
